Louis Marchand was one of the premiere keyboard (harpsichord and organ) virtuosos in late-17th, early 18th century France. Large numbers of devotees would consistently attend his performances throughout Paris (one of which was Rameau whose compositions Marchand influenced). Highly respected as a composer and performer, he tended to not worry about restraining his flamboyant and difficult character traits. Despite these qualities, he was known as "Marchand, le Grand" to many of his contemporaries and the positive aspects of his reputation caused many to seek him out as a teacher.
